Research experience:

Research experience in Condensed Matter Physics for thirty six years.

The expert in areas

   - Studies of the physical properties of the materials by the scattering of various types of radiation (neutron, gamma-ray, X-ray, synchrotron, Mössbauer, muon);

  - Crystallography;

  - Magnetism;

  - Creations and operation of neutron and gamma spectrometers and diffractometers.

Research interests: Materials with unique properties: complex oxides of rare earth and/or transition metals, layered perovskites, multiferroics, magnetic materials with colossal magnetoresistance and giant magnetocalorimetric effect, superconductors, superionics, catalysts, materials for energy, medical products.

The main scientific results:

Materials with unique physical properties are investigated: magnetic materials that exhibit CMR effects, multiferroics, superionics, HTS materials, high-performance materials for electric batteries and accumulators; catalysts; hexaborides and rare earths formates.

Physical explanations of the phenomena resulting CMR effects, spatial phases separation,  nanoclusters formation, charge and orbital ordering, unusual phase transitions, giant oxygen isotope effect are given.  CMR effect in the electron-doped manganites is studied for the first time and the interpretation of the physics of this new phenomenon is given.

Complex organic compounds having prospect of application as medical products of new generation are investigated by neutron and synchrotron diffraction and NMR study.

The original technique of  high-monochromatic  gamma-ray  diffraction with the maximal sensitivity for the study of bulk single crystals is developed.

Several unique world class neutron and gamma-ray diffractometers was created.

Kurbakov A.I. was 12 years the project manager of the establishment and operation of the high-resolution neutron powder diffractometer at reactor Orphee in LLB, France, within the intergovernmental agreement on scientific cooperation between Russia and France.
