The European School on Magnetism 2015

magnetism-eu.pngDear colleagues,

The next session of the “European School on Magnetism” (ESM) series will take place in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, from August 24th to September 4th, 2015. The European School on Magnetism is a pan-European event now closely associated with the JEMS (Joint European Magnetic Symposia) conferences, with regular contact between the scientific advisory committees, and sharing the magnetism.eu portal.

As with previous sessions of ESM, the 2015 School aims at providing a thorough insight into magnetism through a broad series of fundamental lectures, and to address a specific topic of current interest in more detail. The topic chosen for the 2015 School is: “From basic magnetic concepts to spin currents”. Aspects covered during this school will include: basic concepts, magnetism in matter, thermal and transport effects, magnetic characterization, magnetization processes, spin-orbit-related effects, spin currents, interaction with various stimuli (light, electric field etc.), and participation from industrial lecturers to provide perspectives beyond the academic world.

The School is addressed mainly at PhD students and post-docs, both experimentalists and theoreticians. It will consist of approximately 40 hours of lectures, plus many practicals, open question sessions (5-10h), and free access to a library on magnetism. Attendees will be able to present their own work during poster sessions. The detailed program is available from the web site: http://magnetism.eu/school/2015. A few scholarships for waiving registration fees may be granted in very special cases where financial support is clearly an obstacle for attending the school.

Request for participation to the school opens today. Potential attendees are expected to send, along with their application form, a motivation letter and, for PhD students and post-docs, a recommendation letter from their supervisor. The forthcoming important dates are :

Registration fees are 400€ for students, PhD and post-docs, and 600€ for permanent staff. The fees cover all accommodation, meals, coffee breaks, local transport, excursion and social activities for the full duration of the school.

Various financial supports have allowed keeping these fees moderate, to support the participation of students. No extra support is available. In particular, travel costs remain at the charge of the attendees. More details about the registration procedure may be found on the web site: http://magnetism.eu/school/2015/registration.

We would like to ask you to circulate this announcement to all those who may be interested in this School. The leaflet of the School may be downloaded from the web site, or directly from this link. Practical information will be added on the web site on a regular basis.

We also invite you to have a look at the page with links to magnetism-related events (http://magnetism.eu/agenda) and to submit us any events you think can be of interest to the participants in the school. Notice also the job market in the field of magnetism, open from today, dedicated to the announcement of PhDs, post-docs and tenure positions. This service is free of charge. Do not hesitate to post your announcements!

April 15th 2015: deadline for the requests for participation

May 15th 2015: notification of acceptance or waiting list

June 15th 2015: deadline for payment of the fees, otherwise cancellation for the benefice of the waiting list.
